Eating local food , a trend for Xmas?

by Cedric Fontaine

Around the globe, there's a movement to better eating. The international Slow Food movement, as an example, promotes good, clean and fair. Purchasers seek products with healthy ingredients and simple but also desire to meet with the artisans and local producers. To connect artisans with consumers that want to be aware of the impact of their food choices is a real trend in 2011.

With the 100 miles food concept shoppers try to buy only local foods. Challenge yourself to try only foods grown, produced and sold within 100 miles of your house. Depending where you are located, it could be easy during the summer and really hard in the winter.

Globalization has led on to disconnect clients and seasons. Consume responsibly it's to ensure that you'll eat according to the productions and not always according to your desires.

The principle of local is often extensive and everybody has their own vision of what it is. As with the new green-washing marketing, will we see local-washing soon in the food industry ?

The holiday season is an opportunity to prepare family meals and discover gourmet products, we do not buy during the year. With this trend, and purchases over the Internet, it is simple for all consumers, anywhere in the world, to receive regional specialties. The gift baskets of local products are present ideas for exchanges or to thank your hosts.

In Canada, as an example, producers in recent times offer new ideas or products of high quality. Just think about the food-based maple syrup or the new birch syrup trend.

During this holiday season, be sure to taste new local products from your area, and good foods are always better when shared whith friends and family ! Our collective choices and actions as consumers will influence great change on how food is cultivated and produced around the world.
