Find Beechworth Wineries And Events

by Karl Larkins

The historical town of Beechworth, is located in the North East region of Victoria, Australia. In recent times, this region has become a popular tourist destination and ever expanding centre of wine production. The vineyards here have been expanding since the 1950's and notably, many of their wines are exported around the world. During 2009/10 this district in Victoria, also received a commendation in the heritage and culture categories. The following paragraphs take a closer look at Beechworth wineries.

Previously named the Mayday Hills, Beechworth was renamed in 1853. During the years of the gold rush in the eighteen fifties, the area was also renowned for its major growth, both economically and commercially. Since this era, the region has been producing wine and there are around twenty four vineyards in the vicinity. The region is located on the foothills of the Victorian Alps, and therefore forms part of the Alpine Valleys.

Ridge tops and hillsides form the backdrop for many of the vineyards, which are set amidst some stunning scenery. For generations, many of the wineries have been family owned and run. The owners regularly open their cellar doors, offering wine tasting events and guided tours of the vineyards. Groups and individuals alike are welcome, and often lunches and entertainment are also provided.

It is suggested by some, that the wines produced in this district are of the finest quality in the country. The majority of wines produced here are of the Riesling, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Shiraz varieties.

The most widely planted grape throughout Australia, is the Shiraz variety. Consequently, Shiraz wines account for one fifth of all wine grape production in the country. Both nationally and internationally, it is claimed that Shiraz is the most popular of all Australia's red wines.

Making up only one percent of Australia's grape crush, the Pinot Noir grape, it is suggested thrives in the cooler climates of Victoria. As such, some commentators claim, that this region produces the finest Pinot Noir wines.

The Sunny days and cooler evening temperatures found in Beechworth, are believed to encourage the best environment for the Chardonnay grape variety. Perhaps that is why in recent times, exports of this wine have witnessed a sharp increase. As such Chardonnay from this region is drank around the world.

It is widely known that Riesling wines originated in Germany. However, this variety of grape has been grown in Australia's vineyards for many years. Again, this district is believed to produce a quality Riesling.

For those that so desire, bio dynamic and organic vineyards can also be found in the region. In order for the wines to be certified as organic, the vineyards have to adhere to a very strict set of standards. Although there is differing opinion, some wine connoisseurs argue that bio dynamic wines are of a higher quality than that of their counterparts.

It is suggested that Beechworth wineries produce wines of distinction, and many are exported around the world. Visitors have the opportunity to explore no fewer than twenty four vineyards, offering lunch and entertainment to groups and individuals alike.
